Racer Appreciation Night, March 2nd

Just a reminder that this coming Friday, March 2nd, is our monthly Racer Appreciation Night! This is a normal club racing points race starting at 6:00pm as usual, but with special perks; your racing entry fee will be reduced by $5 for every class you run, amounting to $10 for the first entry and $5 for each additional entry!

Everyone who signs up for racing will get free pizza on us, and will be entered into a raffle drawing for free loot (to be determined, in the past we have given out new off-road model kits) as well as other prizes - including tires, bodies and free racing - to be given out the day of the race. Come check out all of the new improvements we've made to the facility in the recent months!

JBRL Electric Round 1 at OC/RC March 3rd

Racer Appreciation Night, Track Rebuild

Hot Rod Hobbies will be doing a track rebuild to greet the new year with style this Sunday, January 8th! As in the past, Jimmy will be offering a mess of free club race entries to those who show up and help for the entire day! Please be aware that the age requirement for workers is 18 or older, unless you clear it through Jimmy directly.

If you have an idea for a cool new layout, feel free to download the below template and submit your concept to Jimmy for consideration, either via e-mail or by fax, at (661) 255-2196.

Just a note to make our nitro racers aware that there will be no gas/nitro vehicles allowed on the track from Wednesday, October 26th thru Saturday, October 29th, to prepare for the electric JBRL finals. This means that our Friday night club race on the 28th will be electric only. Also, please remember that there will be no regular club race on Saturday the 29th, due to the JBRL event.

The final races of the JBRL racing series are almost upon us, at Hot Rod Hobbies! These single-day events will be taking place on Saturday, October 29th for the electric series and Saturday, November 12th for nitro. Remember, regardless of whether or not you have run any of the races in the JBRL series, you are free to sign up and participate...so come and get a taste of what the Jimmy Babcock Racing League is all about, and perhaps you'll want to race in next year's series!

Because of these races, there will be no club racing program on either day, however we will still be running our Friday club races and those will be run in the dry, so be sure you have the correct tires for high traction, blue groove conditions! If you're not sure, check with the hobby shop and they will get you set up with the right tires for your vehicles.

The Reedy Truck Race of Champions is upon us!

This weekend, drivers of all skill levels, from all parts of the country and even the globe, will converge on the dusty confines of Hot Rod Hobbies' world-famous off-road track. Over the weekend, a new layout was put in that will challenge all comers...and we are anticipating a fantastic two days of racing!

Jimmy wants to let everyone know that there is no entry limit at this race - run however many classes you want, and nobody will be turned away...you can sign up to race at any time. Nitro drivers should be aware that for the rest of the week, there will be no nitro vehicles allowed on the track at all, to try and keep it in the best possible shape for the big race. You will be able to get back on the track as of October 10th.

Because of the race weekend, our regular club racers should be aware that there will be no Friday or Saturday racing. If you've never been to a big race at Hot Rod Hobbies, though...you should consider signing up for the Reedy Truck Race of Champions!

The end of summer is gradually approaching, and we can now look forward to the triumphant return of a Hot Rod Hobbies racing institution: The Reedy Truck Race of Champions! On the weekend of October 8th, this two-day race will become a showcase for the very best in off-road R/C racing, featuring stiff competition in both stadium truck and short course. Three qualifying heats will be held on Saturday and triple-A mains will be the order of the day on Sunday.

Congratulations to the new World Champion!

In preparation for the 2011 IFMAR Electric Off-Road World Championships in Vaasa, Finland, Team Associated's Ryan Cavalieri attended this year's Hot Rod Hobbies Off-Road Shootout, taking home wins in both Mod Truck and 4WD...but the 2WD buggy win eluded him (that honor went to Team Losi Racing's Dustin Evans). Perhaps using that loss to fuel his motivation, Cav managed to hold off his teammate, Ryan Maifield, to secure the World Championship in exciting fashion, yesterday.

Everyone at Hot Rod Hobbies congratulates Ryan on his outstanding achievement! Below is the third and deciding A main event, where Cavalieri clinches the Championship.

14th Annual Hot Rod Hobbies Shootout Results!

Summer is fast approaching, but the action has never been hotter at Hot Rod's! Turnouts for all of our club racing nights have been outstanding, including the newly-added Friday night races...and all three nights are about to begin new points series, at the beginning of May - this is your chance to have a shot at taking a championship win in one of our many classes, including the brand new Rookie 4x4 class, by earning points in at least five races in these two-month racing series.

Also, don't forget the 14th Annual Hot Rod Hobbies Shootout, taking place July 8-10 this year. This is always a huge off-road race that attracts professional and amateur R/C drivers from around the nation and indeed, the world...some of the finest off-road racers show up to compete on our track at this annual event, it is not to be missed. Particularly fun for rookies is the Pro/Am, where we'll match rookie drivers up with experienced pros, who will give them driving and setup tips!

On Saturday March 12th, Hot Rod Hobbies will play host to the first event of the 2011 JBRL Electric off-road race series. We invite anyone who is interested in racing to show up early and sign up for this opening round of the JBRL. You need not be a member of anything, or even plan on participating in the entire JBRL race series...all interested drivers are welcome to sign up for one of the many available classes. Spectators are also welcome to show up and enjoy the competition on the track. We hope to see you out there!

It's a new year and we've got our first round of fresh Hot Rod Hobbies off-road club racing champions to crown, for 2011. Beginning with this weekend, we're going to have one more day each week, where racers have the opportunity to vie for the series win: Fridays! Friday Night Club Racing Begins March 4th!

You wanted it, you got it! Turnouts for our club racing have continued to be excellent and Jimmy has decided, with input from our racers, to start a third club racing night each week. Beginning March 4th, Friday nights will be another chance for you to compete against some of the best off-road drivers in Southern California! This will be another points series, just as Tuesdays and Saturdays have been...and the program will mirror Tuesday night's, with racing getting underway at 6:00pm.

As a result, there will be no more Friday Night Under The Lights practice nights, however Jimmy is considering creating a new night for this, as it has proven to be pretty popular. So stay tuned, but we hope to see you out there on March 4th for our first Friday Night club race!

New rules and classes for Short Course!

Just an update that Jimmy has made a few changes to the Short Course classes and rules, going into effect with the next series. The separate Intermediate and Unlimited classes will give way to "Pro-2" and "Pro-4" Short Course classes, in which experienced drivers will be allowed to run any motor they can handle in a 2wd (Pro-2) or 4wd (Pro-4) truck. See the official rules for full details. The 4wd trucks are starting to gain momentum and with the announcement of Team Associated's 4wd SC-10 truck, we're expecting turnouts to continue to grow.

Beyond these two classes, Hot Rod Hobbies will continue to offer three levels of stock (17.5 brushless/27t brushed) racing, in the form of Rookie, Sportsman and Expert classes.

Friday night under the lights, February 4th

The first Friday of the month (and the year) is fast approaching, on February 4th...and that means it's our now-customary "Friday Night Under The Lights" practice night! Five dollars buys you all day practice until the lights go out, at 10:00pm. We supply the pizza, so you don't need to take a break from honing those driving skills to go get dinner! Come out and enjoy some quality track time in the cool evening hours, with live lap timing over the PA system, to let you know how you're doing. It's a good time with your friends and fellow racers, without the pressure to perform of our club racing!

10th scale October, JBRL this weekend!

We have a cornucopia of random updates for Hot Rod Hobbies racers. First of all, the excitement of free 10th scale entries will continue, throughout October! With any paid Short Course or Nitro club racing fee, you can race a traditional 10th scale stadium truck or buggy, free of charge. If one of those classic 10th scale classes is all you're interested in racing, you pay only $5.00 for the race night!

Don't forget that this weekend is the JBRL Electric Series finals, from October 9th-10th! You don't need to have participated in the series to race at this event, so show up and experience the excitement of the JBRL for yourself. A new track layout has been installed for the event that is sure to provide some awesome racing. Pictures will be forthcoming, as the weekend draws nearer!

Please note that because of the JBRL race, there will be no club racing this Saturday. Also, there will be no nitro racing at the Tuesday Night club race (October 5th), to preserve the track surface for the JBRL event.

It's that time, again! In preparation for the final round of the JBRL electric series at Hot Rod Hobbies, we will be putting in a new off-road layout. As always, we need your help with the rebuild! Those of you who have the perfect layout in mind can submit your concepts using the PDF file below. Only designs using this template, with the proper lane widths, will be accepted. They can be dropped off at the shop, e-mailed to jimmy@hotrodhobbies.com or faxed to 661-255-2196.

On Sunday, October 3rd, we will tear up the old track and install the new layout...and everyone who comes out to the track and works at least eight hours will get pizza, soda, and a month of their first class entry at our club races, for free. We hope to see you out there!

Friday night under the lights reminder, new rules for Spec Short Course...

Just a reminder that the first Friday of the month is this Friday, September 3rd...and that means it's our now-customary "Friday Night Under The Lights" practice night! Five dollars buys you all day practice until the lights go out, at 10:00pm. We supply the pizza, so you don't need to take a break from honing those driving skills to go get dinner!

Also, an important update for our Short Course drivers currently racing in the spec classes (both sportsman and expert). New rules are going into effect as of the next club racing series (starting this weekend), which include 27 turn brushed or 17.5 brushless motors in spec. Be sure to read up on the new rules, if you should be among those who would like to switch from the closed-endbell RTR motors, to the convenience of brushless, or would like to be able to perform regular maintenance on a traditional 27t brushed motor, rather than chucking your old RTR motor when it just isn't getting the job done and buying a new one.

So you say your 10th scale stadium truck or buggy is gathering dust, with the short course explosion that has happened at Hot Rod's? Well, it's time to bring them back out and race them. Jimmy Babcock has dubbed next month, "Tenth Scale September" here at Hot Rod Hobbies!

Sign up for at least one paid class at any race in September, and you can race your tenth scale buggy or stadium truck free of charge. If you are not interested in running a short course truck, eighth scale or nitro vehicle and only want to run a stadium truck or buggy, your entry fee will be only $5 per class! Jimmy wants to see the traditional 10th scale classes make a comeback at Hot Rod's and if it takes offering deep discounts and free registration, that's what he's willing to do to make it happen. Just an update to let you all know that Jimmy has updated the Short Course rules for our club racing, creating a "Rookie Stock Short Course" category (as that's become the dominant rookie vehicle) and adding restrictions to ensure a more level playing field. Rookie has devolved into something of an "outlaw" class of late, so this should help the new guys get a better handle on their vehicles and ensure more consistent competition for them. If you're a rookie, read the new rules and make sure your truck conforms to the rules...we will be watching!

Jimmy wanted all of our club racers to be aware that there will be no nitro classes at the club race on Tuesday the 13th, to prepare the track for the Off-Road Shootout. Weekend club racers will note that the Shootout conflicts with the normal Saturday club race on the 17th, so they're encouraged to sign up for the Shootout...there will be no club racing that weekend.

The 13th Annual Shootout Track Design Challenge

The 13th Annual Hot Rod Hobbies Off-Road Shootout & Short Course Spectacular is fast approaching...and in the tradition of past events, Jimmy Babcock invites all of you budding track designers to submit your concepts for a killer track layout! All entries must be submitted using the template below. They can be dropped off at the shop, e-mailed to jimmy@hotrodhobbies.com or faxed to 661-255-2196. The winner of the design contest will be given their first class entry to the Shootout, on the house!

The Hot Rod Hobbies Shootout is a world class race, which routinely attracts off-road drivers from all over the country and indeed, around the world. Some of the top racers from Japan and Europe have come to our track for the Shootout, to test their skills against other off-road pros. Drivers who attend this event will be rubbing elbows with some of the best drivers in R/C, and if you're a rookie...prepare to be paired up with one of them as your mentor, in the R/C Pro-Am! It's a rare opportunity to learn from the best of the best.

Winners for Paved Oval 1st Half of 2010

Once a month, on the first Sunday of the month, the paved oval at Hot Rod Hobbies experiences a breed of racing with electric cars that test the limits of both speed and traction. Every six months, new champions are crowned...and this past Sunday, they took their place among the kings of speed at Hot Rod's.

Only two classes saw enough racers complete the series minimum of four races. David Lopes took the crown in Sportsman 21.5 and in single-cell 17.5, Paul Cathey is now the man to beat, edging out Larry Ruby by one point. Congratulations to the winners!

Please be aware that no 8th scale nitro vehicles will be allowed to practice on the newly redesigned track from Wednesday the 28th through Saturday the 1st, as we prepare the surface for the JBRL Electric Series, round 3. Nitro WILL, however, be allowed to participate in the club races on both Tuesday the 27th (wet track) and Saturday the 1st (Dry track).

The first Friday of every month is a special "under the lights" practice night, here at Hot Rod Hobbies! This is a great chance for you to come out after school or work and hone your driving skills, with a bunch of other off-road drivers! Practice will be held on Friday, May 7th from 6pm-10pm and your practice fee of $5.00 entitles you to free pizza! Come and socialize, get driving and pit tips from other drivers and dial in your vehicles for those all important race nights!

A note for our JBRL Electric Series participants, who are looking forward to the upcoming Round 3 event at Hot Rod's on Sunday, May 2nd: There will be practice on Saturday May 1st - from 10am to 3pm - with a club race starting at 4pm. The track will be run dry all weekend, to create that insane "blue groove" traction we all love so much!

New Short Course Changes, New Layout Coming!

For those of you who have not been to the club races since the start of the new January-February series last week, there has been a change to the Short Course class lineup being offered at Hot Rod's. The "Expert" class has been eliminated and is now an "Unlimited" class, which will allow any motor wind and also the new 4x4 vehicles that are being released (check with the shop for details). The rules for the Short Course classes can be read here!

Also, we are putting in a new layout next Sunday (January 17th). As usual, anyone who is out there working for eight or more hours will receive a month of their first club racing entries free! Jimmy is soliciting track designs for the new layout, so if you have some big ideas you'd like to see in the new course, be sure to download and print the template below, to submit your entry (no special compensation for the winner of this design, just bragging rights). Only designs using this template, with the proper lane widths, will be accepted. They can be dropped off at the shop, e-mailed to jimmy@hotrodhobbies.com or faxed to 661-255-2196.

Please be aware that as of the November-December club racing series, we will be separating the Short Course class into three different skill levels, each with their own requirements: Sportsman Spec, Intermediate and Expert. What was previously known as "Spec Slash" will now fall under the "Sportsman Spec" Short Course class, though skilled racers can obviously opt to compete in the Intermediate and Expert classes. Congratulations to Zack Rogers, whose track design was selected as the winner for this year's Reedy Truck Race of Champions! The new layout went in on Sunday, and it combines many familiar elements of the past several tracks...but in a new and interesting configuration. The Reedy Truck Race Approaches!

This annual event at Hot Rod Hobbies, being held September 25-27, attracts racing talent from all over the country and around the globe, as both electric and nitro drivers attempt to dominate on a track layout designed by one of their own! If you're interested in taking on the challenge of designing a track worthy of this race, don't forget to download the official design template and perhaps win up to three free class entries at the event! We'll be installing the new layout on the 20th and as always, our helpers can expect that Jimmy will reward them handsomely for their efforts, including free club racing entries!

Track Design Contest Entry Template

For all those budding track design pros among you, it's time to show your stuff! Click the image above to download a PDF format template of the Hot Rod Hobbies track. All entries for this year's Reedy Truck Race of Champions design contest will need to be submitted using this template. Please remember that your lanes must be twelve feet wide, the scale on the bottom of the template represents ten feet.

Of the entries that meet the design criteria and are submitted on this template, one winner will be chosen on September 19th, the day prior to our track change. The prize? Up to three free class entries into the Reedy Truck Race of Champions!

And don't forget, anyone who comes out to work the full day of the track rebuild will receive free entries for their first class at Hot Rod Hobbies club racing, for a month.

On September 20th, we will be putting in a new track layout for the upcoming Reedy Truck Race of Champions, September 25-27. Everyone who comes out for the day to help get the job done will receive their first class entry fee for the next month of club racing, on the house.

We're also going to be running a track design contest...and this time around, we'll be providing a template that interested designers will use to submit their plans, with the necessary dimensions and lane width measurements that should be followed. Only designs submitted using this template will be accepted - we'll get that posted for download soon, so keep checking back!

New ROAR rules Short Course class announced

In response to the explosion in popularity of the Short Course class and in preparation for the Reedy Truck Race of Champions, I'm happy to report that as of the next club racing series, Hot Rod Hobbies will be offering a ROAR rules Short Course class, in addition to the current "open" class. Here is a PDF of the provisional rules, courtesy of ROAR's website. Aside from meeting measurements and weight requirements, trucks will be able to run either LiPo or NiMH batteries, with a 27t brushed or 17.5 brushless motor. These are the rules that will be used for the Short Course class at the Reedy Truck Race of Champions - there will be no "open" rules class at this event.

Due to a scheduling conflict, Jimmy has changed the next oval club race to Saturday, August 1st at 9:00am sharp...this, instead of the usual "first Sunday" day and time. Mowry and Tebo win the Shootout Pro-Am

A rookie driver couldn't have asked for a better mentor! Hot Rod Hobbies local, Brian Mowry, drew Jared Tebo as his Pro in the Shootout R/C Pro-Am...and their combined skill was enough to net Tebo a $100 bill, and Mowry a first-place trophy...plus, the kind of experience you just can't pay for. Many a local driver could be heard expressing their envy, trackside (along with a few plots on how to pass as a rookie, at next year's event) - but the results were clear. Not only would Tebo give advice and set-up help, but he'd give Mowry a spot in the Kyosho tents right next to him, where he could observe all the pros and get their expert advice.

It's a great reason for rookie drivers to attend the Shootout and if you have the chance to make it next year, do not miss this tremendous opportunity. Congratulations Brian on your well-earned victory! Thanks to the Kyosho America website for the photo.

Hot Rod Hobbies and Jimmy Babcock would like to thank everyone who came out and participated in the 12 Annual Off-Road Shootout, this year! Thrilling victories and agonizing defeats were on tap during today's races, most of which came down to the third and deciding main! Jared Tebo came in with a convincing victory in Modified Truck, requiring only two races to wrap it up while piloting a prototype Kyosho truck...but the other classes were all up in the air, ratcheting up the tension for the top contenders and making each battle a seriously spectator-friendly event.

Congratulations to the winners, we hope to see you all again next year! In the interest of accuracy, I'll be waiting to post the winners until I have an official RC Scoring Pro results sheet - there are several tiebreakers and I don't want to post incorrect information. Matt Francis inducted into RC Car Hall of Fame!

He's a multiple time world champion in off-road R/C racing and now, there is an official Hall of Fame to honor Losi/Trinity's Matt Francis and other racers like him, whose achievements in the sport of R/C racing warrant inclusion! Jimmy Babcock has formed the RC Car Hall Of Fame to honor the contributions of the sport's greatest names. Congratulations, Matt!

Shootout, Day 2 - The bar gets raised!

With one day of qualifying under their belts, it was clear that everyone came ready to up the ante today...and up it, they did! Qualifying times were much faster, across the board and after four rounds, we had new TQ times in every class!

In the A2 main of the stacked Open Short Course demo class, the battle continued to rage...this time, with most perhaps anticipating another battle between Team Associated's pair of Ryans, it would be teammate Frank Root roaring ahead to squeeze out a half second edge over Cavalieri to secure the victory. The winner of this demo class will be decided tomorrow...it's bound to draw a lot of spectators!

Shootout, Day 1 - Top Qualifiers!

The first day of intense driving is behind us! With reportedly well over 300 drivers registered to race the event, this year's Shootout is already a success...but there are still two days of racing left, and one more day of qualifying. The drivers are all getting their vehicles dialed into the new layout, the track has grooved up, and the competition is only going to get more fierce over the next two days, as the rest of our registered drivers log their qualifying runs!

This year features a triple-A main Open Short Course demo class, with the pros showing off their door-to-door racing skills over the three days of the Shootout, one race per day between rounds! The demo also sports an international flair, with current IFMAR 2WD buggy World Champion, Hayato Matsuzaki, along with Masami Hirosaka's young protege, Naoto Matsukura (who just last year became the youngest driver ever to win an IFMAR 1/12th scale world title at the age of 15), hailing from Japan. Today, though, it would be Team Associated's Ryans - Cavalieri and Maifield - duking it out for the top spot, with Maifield taking the win over Cav by a mere two seconds. Look for tomorrow's race to be even more competitive!

Because none of the submitted layouts were selected, everyone who submitted designs for the contest will be included in a drawing, to take place at the driver's meeting on the first day of the Shootout. Hot Rod Local wins National Championship

The ROAR electric off-road nationals were held this weekend in Omaha, Nebraska, and a Hot Rod Hobbies local has taken the national championship in Stock Truck! Brent Calvert, driving his Team Associated T4, had come just one point short of the title at last year's Nationals (held here at Hot Rod's)...but this time, he would not be denied!

Congratulations to Brent and all of his sponsors for a job well done! You can bet Brent will be competing at the Hot Rod Hobbies Shootout (July 10-12), as well...so if you want to test your mettle against a national champion, you'll have your chance next month!

Off-Road and Paved Oval Schedule Changes!

Just a reminder to our Saturday afternoon club racers...beginning this weekend (Saturday, June 6th), racing will begin at 4:00pm on Saturdays. This is a permanent time change!

Hot Rod Hobbies and the JBRL are proud announce a four-race sponsorship deal with Rip Michels, at Toyota (Irwindale) Speedway! Hot Rod's and the Jimmy Babcock Racing League will be featured on the hood and quarter panel of Rip's super late-model race car, in the premiere division. This weekend (Saturday) will be the first of the four-race deal, with races following on the Saturdays of June 20th and July 11th.

Saturday club racing scheduling change

JBRL Nitro Series Round 1 Breaks Records

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - April 30, 2009 - Thanks to all who came out this past Sunday to Thunder Alley for round #1 of the JBRL Nitro Series 2009! Like most have heard, we had 340 entries which broke all JBRL and Thunder Alley records for attendance. Unfortunately, due to the large and unexpected (but welcomed) turnout, we had to eliminate a round of qualifying and run just one round and the mains. I apologize for that but most of you know that we had no other options. Unfortunately, I can't cap or limit the entries, because that would exclude people from the event - which, in turn, would put them behind the eight ball as far as the entire series goes. Most would not return to another round if they were not allowed to race at an earlier round. I have been talking to people and coming up with ideas for next year's series, to accommodate all the racers and yes...next year's first round will definitely be two days, with buggy run on one day and truggy on the other. This will allow the drivers who are only racing one class to still have a one day race. Those who are running two classes will have to be there both days, but man will it be nice to get done early both days! We will see how the numbers stack up in rounds 2-7 before deciding whether or not to make each round 2 days, next year.

With all that said, I have been trying to figure out the best way to accommodate the masses for the remainder of 2009. I have kicked around a lot of ideas and unfortunately, making this year's races two days long is out of the question. The schedule is set and most people have planned for one day races. So I just wanted to let everyone know that if we have 250 entries or less at a round for the rest of this season, we will be able to get our two rounds of qualifying in - but if we get 251 or more, we will only be running one round of qualifying...but I will make that single round a couple minutes longer and of course the mains will be a little longer, as well. I apologize for the inconvenience, but it's really the only way to get the races done at a reasonable hour.
